Mystery
Before this weekend is over, ten thousand children will starve to death, four thousand will be brutally beaten by a parent, and another thousand will be raped. The reality of suffering and of evil that we see all around us is enough to make us question the existence, let alone the goodness or the power of God.
The questions inherent in human suffering have haunted theologians, philosophers, and regular people for millennia. So, we are diving in with both feet to try our hand at Making Sense Out of Suffering.
The text by the same name and written by Dr. Peter Kreeft is our main source for discovery. According to Kreeft, there is a difference between a problem, which has a solution, and a mystery, which has none. However, with a mystery we can find and negotiate clues which should enlighten our search for answers.
This is the first of several posts regarding the existence of evil and human suffering, and how God figures into the picture.
